Health Information Exchange for Dentists

Molly PereiraFeatured News

Oral health and physical health often go hand in hand. So why don’t more dentists and doctors share patient information?

Imagine your oral surgery patient forgot to mention they were currently taking blood thinners for a heart condition. Or a patient comes in for scheduled surgery and discloses they have a pacemaker, which would affect your IV sedation plan and potentially cause the appointment to be cancelled. Or maybe you have patients who have difficulty understanding their medical history or don’t know how to complete intake forms.

By participating in a Health Information Exchange (HIE), you can securely open these critical lines of communication and fill in gaps in clinical knowledge. Access to the right health information at the right place and at the right time improves the quality, efficiency, and safety of the care your patients receive.

The CDA is working with Contexture, Colorado’s largest health information exchange (HIE) to bring an important resource to the dental community.

Funding is available to join the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization’s (CORHIO) HIE with no implementation fees ($10,000 value). Dentists can join the HIE network and access real-time online patient medical summaries including:

  • General health history
  • Medications (and signs of drug-seeking, especially opioids)
  • Recent hospitalizations, procedures, or surgeries
  • Test results
  • Allergies
