Advocacy in Action: Dentists at the Capitol Lobby Day

The CDA hosted its annual Dentists at the Capitol Lobby Day on Friday, Feb. 15. Lobby Day is a unique opportunity for dentists across Colorado to talk with legislators about the important issues that affect the dental community. From opioid prescribing and tobacco regulation to new substantial focus on examining the high costs of healthcare, dentistry is currently facing several issues that will affect the future of the profession.

This year, a group of 25 dentists and CU dental students lobbied state legislators on several issues. The group’s overarching message to legislators highlighted dentists’ expansive work to improve access and value over the last several years. In both dental coverage and preventative services usage, measurable progress has been made. This year, key bills to continue this momentum include efforts to address the $1,000 maximum for Medicaid adult dental care, CHP+ coverage for pregnant mothers and senior dental care. CDA members and students delivered these messages directly to legislators over breakfast and throughout the day, ensuring Colorado dentists’ commitment to reducing overall health system costs and improving value for patients.

This year’s event made a strong impression on Colorado’s legislators. Effective advocacy, however, takes more than just one visit to the Capitol. The CDA encourages year-round advocacy and engagement with your elected officials. Check the CDA’s Take Action page regularly for opportunities like action alerts, the action team leader program and key bills.
