From the Summer 2023 Journal of the Colorado Dental Association
This year marks a special occasion for our University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine Doctor of Dental Surgery graduates and dental school. It is the school’s 50th anniversary, a milestone that guided us to where we are today.
We were fortunate to have celebrated 77 graduates on May 22, surrounded by more than 1,000 alumni, families and friends. CU alumna and new CDA President Leah Schulz, D.D.S. (class of 2014), provided the commencement address, sharing with graduates:
“Class of 2023, when you apply your talents, resiliency, compassion and drive, and treat people well, the rest will surely follow. Congratulations on your accomplishments, and best wishes for your future successes.”
Dr. Schulz also received the CU Dental Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes alumni who have demonstrated excellence in the dental profession and commitment to community involvement, and whose work has made a significant mark in dentistry.
Her legacy is a testament to the dental school’s top-tier education and how she has paved the way for our future graduates. This year’s class will continue their journey in residencies and military assignments, as well as private practice and care in rural areas. We are proud of their incredible achievements.
The education of these new dentists was strengthened by the school’s strong partnership with the CDA and its member dentists. The school takes great pride in the fact that past CDA presidents serve as community-based mentors as well as full-time members of the CU faculty.
As a partner, the CDA generously sponsors the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) dues for our first-year students. The organization also provides an endowed dental student scholarship each year to ensure our students are supported through dental school.
Through activities such as the Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM), dental students witness the service and dedication to our profession that CDA dentists demonstrate. By participating in CDA Lobby Day, students see the importance of advocacy in keeping the profession strong.
On behalf of the CU School of Dental Medicine family and these new dentists, I want to express our appreciation to the members of the CDA, its leadership and the CDA Foundation. Thank you in advance for welcoming these new Colorado dentists into the community. We look forward to celebrating more monumental milestones ahead.
