Actions and Algorithms for Medical Emergencies:
How to Save a Life (Including Your Own)

There are more medically compromised patients coming to our offices than ever before. Acquire “up to the minute” actions for dealing with a medical emergency while challenging preconceived or outdated ideas. “Conversational History” will be discussed and how it will uncover medical issues not revealed by the standard health history form. Additionally, participants will learn simple, non-invasive critical tests that can reduce overall risks. This course will clearly delineate indications for emergency drug use and proper dosages, as well as demonstrate how to assemble and maintain an ideal emergency drug kit. The newest techniques for drug administration will be shown for participants to hone their skills utilizing simulation models and real drugs. Attendees will receive and review color-coded instructional cards depicting the most common life-threatening situations with algorithms providing an easy to follow action plan for both dentist and team members. We will also review the legal and moral obligations that are presented during a medical crisis.

Introduction to Sleep-Disordered Breathing and the Management of Upper Airway Resistance
Speaker: Keith Swartz, M.D.
This course is designed to be an introduction to the clinical diagnostics and assessment of sleep-disordered breathing. The concept of static and dynamic airway collapse will be explored. Assessment of the airway from a global perspective will be presented. Management of multilevel airway resistance and the concept of hybrid therapy for our patients in collaboration with physician partners will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand basic diagnostics in different types of sleep disordered breathing
• Understand the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea
• Recall upper airway anatomy and its implication for upper airway obstruction
• Explain concepts of anatomical/static versus physiological/dynamic airway compromise
• Present detailed methods of analyzing airway obstruction at all levels
• Be able to articulate appropriate therapy for obstruction at different levels of the airway

Dentists Certification
The CDA requires members to complete 15 hours of CE each year (eight of which must be clinical) to maintain “membership in good standing.” The CDA grants one credit for each hour of attendance at a dental-related education program. To qualify, all CE must be ADA CERP, AGD PACE or AMA Category 1 certified.
Dental Team Certification
Dental hygienists, assistants and other staff members should refer to their respective associations for CE requirements.
The Colorado Dental Association is an ADA CERP recognized provider.
