Important Information about the CDA Endorsed Medical Benefit Plan

October 15, 2010

The CDA Medical Benefit Plan recently made a decision to terminate self-funded benefit plans effective November 30, 2010. The Colorado Dental Association would like to take this opportunity to address several common questions and concerns from CDA members about this announcement.

The CDA Medical Benefit Plan was endorsed by the CDA, but not operated or run by the CDA. The Medical Benefit Plan operates under a separate board of directors, which made a decision to terminate the plan based upon the significant losses they continued to have, the inability to find a "stop loss" carrier willing to underwrite the program and the realization the plan would need to increase premiums by 47% in order to continue.

Amalgam Separators - Proposed Rule

October 7, 2010

On Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its intention to issue a proposed rule next year to mandate amalgam separators. The EPA's announcement stated, "EPA expects to propose a rule next year and finalize it in 2012. Dental offices will be able to use existing technology to meet the proposed requirements.  Amalgam separators can separate out 95% of the mercury normally discharged to the local waste treatment plant."

The CDA will monitor this rule development as progress is made and keep membership informed.

October 4, 2010

The fourth annual Colorado Mission of Mercy was held Oct. 1-2, 2010 at the Phil Long Expo Center in Colorado Springs, CO.  Preliminary estimates are that this 100-chair dental clinic provided free dental treatment to over 1,400 adults and children who do not have dental insurance and cannot afford regular care.  In two days, roughly 225 dentists and 125 dental hygienists provided over $1 million in dental services.  Final numbers, photographs and a full report will be published in the coming months.
