Take Action: Support Federal Bill to Repeal Insurance Anti-Trust Exemption
Colorado Rep. Betsy Markey is leading the way in encouraging the U.S. Congress to repeal an insurance industry exemption from federal antitrust laws. Currently, the exemption allows health insurance companies to work jointly to set rates without fear of federal antitrust scrutiny. When this type of behavior is allowed, consumers are hurt by a reduction in innovation and variety in the marketplace, compared to what would be offered in an atmosphere of robust competition between insurance providers.
Yesterday, Rep. Markey introduced new legislation, H.R. 4626, that would enact a full repeal of the antitrust exemptions in place for the insurance industry. Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette is also co-sponsoring the bill. Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet has supported past bills on this issue.
A House vote on H.R. 4626 is expected before the end of the week.
