Grant Funding Offered for Practices Implementing Virtual Dental Home Model and ITR Procedure

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed H.B. 1309 into law in June. The act allows dental hygienists to perform interim therapeutic restorations (ITRs), subject to certain training, experience and supervision requirements. Dentists who would like to implement the virtual dental home model, including utilizing dental hygienists to place ITRs in appropriate circumstances, might be eligible for grant funding from the Caring for Colorado Foundation.

Register for the 2015 Colorado Mission of Mercy in Canon City

June 22, 2015

Volunteer registration is now open for the 2015 Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM) Aug. 14-15 at Harrison School in Canon City. Dentists, dental hygienists, lab technicians, assistants and non-clinical volunteers—about 1,000 volunteers in total—will work together to provide free dental services to Coloradans in need of oral healthcare.

CDA Dentists Headed to Capitol Hill for the 2015 Washington Leadership Conference

A delegation of eight CDA member dentists traveled to Washington, D.C., April 27-29 to participate in the American Dental Association’s 2015 Washington Leadership Conference. As part of a nationwide effort held every spring to increase awareness about oral health issues, the group lobbied Colorado’s U.S. senators and representatives on three key federal bills—the Action for Dental Health Act (H.R. 539), the Student Loan Refinancing Act (H.R. 649), and the RAISE Health Benefits Act of 2015 (H.R. 1185). The goal of this annual conference is to allow dentists to advocate for their patients and peers at the federal level.

Anesthesia Rule Changes Adopted by State Dental Board

May 19, 2015

During fall 2014 and spring 2015, the State Dental Board conducted rulemaking hearings to help implement the dental sunset review bill. The State Board established four related rulemaking committees: anesthesia; CE and fining; licensure; lasers, dental hygiene prescribing and dental laboratories. Ten committee meetings were held through the fall, as well as five rulemaking sessions. These meetings were all open for dentist participation, and the CDA encouraged member dentists to attend and provide input.

Updates to Medicare Opt In/Opt Out Process and Medicare Advantage Plans

In the winter 2015 Journal of the Colorado Dental Association, the CDA published detailed information about the requirement for dentists to either enroll in or opt out of Medicare before June 1, 2015. Since then, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has made some updates in regard to the opt-in/opt-out deadlines and in regard to patients who use Medicare Advantage plans.
