On July 16, the CDA “Ladies in the Loupe” group was officially launched with a brunch at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Despite the high heat and humidity, over 90 women dentists from across Colorado attended the event. The keynote speaker was Dr. Kathleen O’Loughlin, the ADA executive director. Dr. O’Loughlin spoke to the female audience about the fact that women need to embrace leadership in their association to help shape their professional future in Colorado and nationally.
By the year 2014, over 51% of dental students in the U.S. will be women. In addition, she addressed gender imbalances, generational differences, and her own experiences juggling the responsibilities of raising four children and a full-time dental career.

The Ladies in the Loupe group was established to allow women dentists the opportunity to network and meet their female colleagues, in addition to providing a forum to discuss issues of importance to women dentists. Following the brunch, roundtable discussions were held to address topics such as balancing professional and personal demands, developing action plans, and advertising/marketing the dental practice. The afternoon concluded with each table telling their funniest dental-related story. The grand prize was a lovely garden hat, deservingly won by Dr. Celia Turner of Eaton, Colo.
Evaluations were sent to attendees, and the response was extremely positive and enthusiastic. 100% of the survey responders said that attending the Ladies in the Loupe brunch was a good use of their valuable time, and over 90% of respondents stated that they would recommend attending a Ladies in the Loupe event to their friends and colleagues. One comment shared was, “[Ladies in the Loupe] made me very proud to be a part of this group of women.”
The next Ladies in the Loupe program will be Thursday, Oct. 6 at Neiman Marcus in Cherry Creek. It will be a fashion show and networking event for all women dentists in Colorado.
