March 26, 2010
A CDA House of Delegates resolution went into effect on Jan. 1, 2010, requiring that members complete 15 hours of CE per year with at least eight of those hours designated to enhance dental clinical skills and/or procedures. These hours are to be obtained through American Dental Association Continuing Education Recognition Program (CERP) courses, Academy of General Dentistry Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) courses or American Medical Association Category One continuing medical education courses.
This is a CDA membership requirement, not a Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners requirement.
Why the change?
The CDA found it necessary to have a CE requirement in place that was modeled off of the requirements of the other 49 states. With the CDA having over 80% of Colorado licensed dentists as members, our new plan could be used as the framework for any future state CE mandate if necessary.
It’s easy to fulfill these hours. Colorado’s numerous study clubs and groups, along with the CDA Annual Session, offer substantial opportunities to easily achieve these requirements. Please check the Calendar of Events at cdaonline.org for upcoming course listings.
In addition to a new CE requirement, this resolution is also intended to provide the documentation and archiving of your CE credits as a benefit of membership, should you ever need to prove that you have stayed current in the practice of dentistry.
