Colorado Opioid Epidemic Symposium: Safe Opioid Prescribing for Dental Providers

Presented by: Don Teater, M.D., M.P.H., Pain and Addiction Specialist at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium

Learning Objectives:

  • Review local and national data on opioid prescribing patterns, with a particular emphasis on prescribing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Explain the link between opioids and the neurobiology of addiction.
  • Formulate a patient treatment plan that optimizes non-opioid pharmacologic treatment and non-pharmacologic supports for the treatment of acute dental pain.
  • Explain Academic Detailing as an effective educational modality to reduce unsafe opioid prescribing.
