On March 26, new HIPAA requirements for patient records took effect. If your dental office uses electronic records systems, you may now be required to provide electronic copies of records to patients who request them. Dental offices can no longer simply provide printed records in lieu of electronic copies.

On Feb. 1, Gov. Hickenlooper made six new appointments to the State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE). The members appointed for terms expiring on Jan. 1, 2017 are:
•    Dr. Peter Carlesimo of Fort Collins (dentist, reappointed)
•    Dr. Mason Miner of Durango (dentist, appointed)
•    Dr. Laurie Stein of Cedaredge (dentist, appointed)
•    Annette Isenbart, R.D.H. of Stratton (dental hygienist, reappointed)
•    Patricia Schonberger, R.D.H. of Brush (dental hygienist, appointed)
•    Sarah Kuykendall of Highlands Ranch (public member, appointed)

The CDA New Dentist Committee (NDC) hosted a party on Saturday, March 16 for the dental board candidates from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and the second year ISP students.  This was an opportunity for the students to relax and socialize after the stress of taking the dental boards.  The CDA new dentists took this opportunity to introduce themselves to the students and explain what the NDC represents in organized dentistry.  Representatives from the Dentists Professional Liability Trust of Colorado, COPIC Financial Service Group, Patterson Dental, American Express OPEN, Wells Fargo and Perfect Teeth were also in attendance at the event.  To view pictures from the event, visit www.facebook.com/ColoradoNewDentistCommittee.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert that some handheld dental x-ray units purchased online and shipped directly from vendors in Southeast Asia may not meet U.S. regulatory standards. If your office purchased a handheld dental x-ray unit through a credible U.S.-based vendor, this alert should not be of concern.
