All Dentists Must Register with Colorado's PDMP by THIS FRIDAY, Oct. 31

All dentists with a DEA registration are required to register with Colorado's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) by Oct. 31. The PDMP is a secure, online database created in 2005 that provides objective information about patients' controlled substance prescription records to assist Colorado healthcare providers in offering appropriate treatment to their patients. If you have not already signed up to use the PDMP, you may register for an account at: http://www.hidinc.com/copdmp. If you are already registered or are a current user of the PDMP database, no future action is needed at this time to meet the state requirement.

State Board of Dentistry to Consider Sunset Review Rules: Oct. 29 and Nov. 6

The Colorado State Board of Dentistry will meet to review the initial draft rules related to the 2014 Sunset Review Bill (HB14-1227) tomorrow, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at 1560 Broadway, Denver, CO 80202, Conference Room 110D. In addition, an expected overflow meeting of the Colorado State Board of Dentistry is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m. at 1560 Broadway, Denver, CO 80202, Conference Room 110D. DEA Tightens Rules on Hydrocodone

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) recently published a final rule putting additional restrictions on hydrocodone-containing drug products, moving them from Schedule III to Schedule II of the federal Controlled Substances Act. Earlier this year, the American Dental Association (ADA) joined several other health organizations in expressing concern over the move, which imposes additional regulatory controls and administrative, civil, and criminal sanctions on persons who handle or propose to handle hydrocodone combination products, since hydrocodone drugs are often used to treat severe pain related to dental surgery.

Sunset Review Spotlight: Continuing Education

The rulemaking process for the implementation of the 2014 Dental Sunset Review Bill has just begun. As rulemaking progresses, the CDA will provide in-depth information on key topics to help answer commonly asked questions from CDA members. A common area of interest related to the Sunset Review Bill is the new continuing education (CE) requirement for dentists and dental hygienists.
