COFluorideFacts.org Goes Live to Help Colorado Communities

The CDA and Oral Health Colorado (OHCO) launched this week, Colorado Fluoride Facts, a website and set of social media tools that communicate about the benefits, safety and support of community water fluoridation in Colorado. Because of the challenges to this proven public health benefit across Colorado—which have stretched from Loveland to Denver and across to Montrose—the CDA and OHCO developed the online tools to better educate elected officials, community members and supporters about fluoridation.

How Did the 2015 Legislative Session Affect You?

Colorado’s 2015 state legislative session ran from Jan. 7 through May 6. As always, the CDA worked hard at the statehouse on your behalf. It was a busy – and productive – session for the dental profession. This year, the CDA was successful in enacting some reforms to insurer rating systems that will help ensure dentists are treated fairly and consumers have access to accurate information. In addition, the CDA monitored nearly 50 bills that had direct and indirect impacts on the dental profession.

Sunset Review: Anesthesia Rule Changes

During fall 2014 and spring 2015, the Colorado Dental Board conducted rulemaking hearings in order to implement the dental sunset review bill. The State Board established four related rulemaking committees: anesthesia; CE and fining; licensure; lasers, dental hygiene prescribing and dental laboratories. Ten committee meetings were held through the fall, as well as five rulemaking sessions. These meetings were open for dentist participation, and the CDA encouraged member dentists to attend and provide input.

Leading in a Time of Change

My journey to leadership in the dental community started when I was an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska, as a sophomore pre-dent major. I was just elected as the president of the pre-dent club, and we had just met the dean of the dental school in Lincoln, who told us that he was making it a priority to actively recruit Nebraska resident students. Dean Cherrick had a way of communicating with students and was very personable and endearing; I looked to him as a mentor and as an ambassador of dentistry.

Colorado Dental Care Ranks High in Key Areas in ADA Health Policy Institute Analysis

An American Dental Association Health Policy Institute (HPI) report, “The Oral Health Care System: A State-by-State Analysis,” released Dec. 9, 2015, compiled data on the U.S. dental healthcare system in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and the nation as a whole. Colorado statistics from the HPI report demonstrate the outreach and dedication by the CDA and its member dentists to improve access to dental care across the state have been working.

Fluoridation Continues to Win in Colorado

Community water fluoridation continues to be a hot-button issue in towns across Colorado. Recently, Snowmass and Hayden celebrated fluoridation victories. Montrose and Durango continue to educate their communities about the safety and effectiveness of this public health benefit.
