SBDE Issues Revised Draft of Anesthesia Rule

December 17, 2009

This week the CDA received a new revision of the SBDE’s anesthesia rule proposal that would modify the anesthesia permit structure for Colorado dentists. To view a copy of the most recent rule revision, click here. The new rule addresses a number of concerns raised at the Board’s last public rule hearing in October, including:

  • Revision to use ADA definitions for the levels of sedation,
  • Clarification and specificity on EKG requirements,
  • Elimination of the term “anxiolysis” and clarification on premedication requirements, and
  • Addition of a section detailing patient monitoring requirements.

Alert: Make sure you are coding indirect composites correctly!

December 17, 2009

The CDA was recently alerted to a problem with the coding and representation of indirect composite restorations, specifically procedures that involve taking an impression, making the restoration out of oven curable composite and cementing the restoration in place. We have been told that some dentists are representing the procedure to the patient as a porcelain crown and coding this procedure as such. However, the material used for the procedure is a composite, not glass. Thus, the SBDE has determined that this procedure cannot be represented or billed as a porcelain crown. Those who are engaging in this practice may be subject to disciplinary action for fraud. It is important that dentists know the board’s interpretation on this issue, and code and represent the procedure correctly to patients!

Are you interested in serving on the SBDE?

December 17, 2009

The Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) has two positions opening in 2010 – one for a dentist and one for a public member.

These positions will be appointed in the next couple weeks, prior to the SBDE’s meeting on Jan. 21, 2010. The appointment is for a four year term. The commitment includes quarterly full board, monthly panel and additional committee meetings throughout the year.

If you would be interested in a board position – or know someone who would be good in the role – please contact the CDA at (303) 740-6900 for an application. Applications must be filed prior to the end of the year.

Tech Tip docx conversion

December 14, 2009

Do you ever receive a Microsoft attachment that your computer can’t open? Chances are the attachment was created in a version of Microsoft that is newer than the version you have on your machine.

If the attachment ends in .docx (rather than .doc), this document was created in a newer version of Microsoft Word. Likewise, if you receive a document ending in .xlsx (rather than .xls), this spreadsheet was created in a newer version of Microsoft Excel.
