Survey: Help Improve IRS Small Business Communications

In Memoriam: Dr. Tom Grams

gramssmThe CDA extends our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Dr. Tom Grams, who was tragically killed during a humanitarian medical mission in Afghanistan last Thursday.  Dr. Grams was an active member of the CDA for many years – retiring four years ago to make the transition to full-time humanitarian dental work.  Several news sources have honored Dr. Grams and his work, including the Denver Post, the Durango Herald and the ADA News.

A memorial service for Dr. Grams will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15 at the Smiley Building in Durango.

If you have at least 5 years of experience in the practice of dentistry and are interested in sharing your expertise with a colleague, you could be a practice monitor.  

The Dentist Practice Monitor role makes it possible to protect the public and at the same time provide support for dentists who are making changes in their practices and in their lives.  As a Practice Monitor, you can help dentists who have experienced a health-related or substandard care issue requiring their practice be monitored.  Monitors provide direct monitoring service to another dentist, evaluate the practice in regular site visits, and offer suggestions and support.  Monitors enter a fee-for-service agreement with the monitored dentist for a specific time.

Write Congress in Support of Federal Non Covered Services Bill

The ADA is backing a federal bill to stop dental benefit plans from dictating rates that dentists must charge for services not covered under a patient’s plan. 

H.R. 5000 would stop this practice at the national level and would apply to all ERISA or employer self-insured plans. Other provisions in the bill address coordination of benefits, assignment of benefits, downcoding by insurers, equal payment for participating and non participating providers, and other related insurer practices.

Taxes 101: Does Your Practice Qualify for a Payroll Tax Exemption?

Two new tax benefits are available to employers hiring employees who were previously unemployed or only working part-time.  In order to encourage employers to hire unemployed workers, President Obama signed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act on March 18.  The HIRE Act allows an exemption on the employer paid portion of social security payroll taxes (6.2%) for wages paid to new hires after March 18, 2010 and before January 1, 2011.
