Update on Infection Control Requirements: Do all staff need to attend OSHA training?

Several dentists have contacted the CDA asking whether all office employees must now attend an OSHA training course, rather than sending just one designee.

Insurance Credentialing: Should I provide my DEA number on the application?

In 2003, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) issued a policy statement, along with a number of medical organizations, discouraging disclosure of a provider’s DEA registration number to insurance companies or others not involved in the legal chain of distribution for controlled substances. There is concern that use of DEA numbers for provider identification purposes could increase instances of prescription fraud and diversion.

DentalLine9 Call-in Program Helps the Public

Twice a year, the CDA and the Metro Denver Dental Society partner for the DentalLine9 call-in program at 9 News in Denver.  A panel of five dentists takes calls from the public during the news broadcasts to provide dental information.  On Jan. 20, 2011 and Jan. 27, 2011, 9 News phone lines were flooded by callers with dental questions.  We would like to give our sincere thanks to Dr. Nelle Barr, Dr. Jeff Hurst, Dr. Brett Levin, Dr. Jeff Lodl, Dr. Mark Novelen, Dr. Ken Peters, Dr. Pasco Scarpella, Dr. Carrie Seabury, Dr. Eric VanZytveld, Dr. Walt Vogl and Dr. Sean Whalen

Updates for Medicaid Providers – Study Casts, Web Portal Claims Submissions, Billable Hygiene Codes

Colorado Medicaid recently published provider updates, which included several dental-specific changes. Medicaid clarified that no dental provider (including orthodontists) should submit diagnostic models or study casts with claims or prior authorization requests, unless specifically requested by the Medicaid program.

February 2011 Members Spotlight

Dr. Tom Pixley recently represented the CDA at the American Dental Association.
Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND) is one of 10 finalists for the Toms of Maine Grant for Mobile Dental Health.  The winners are decided by public vote online.

Oral Health Screenings at the 2011 National Western Stock Show

The Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus hosted a booth at the January 2011 National Western Stock Show in Denver, offering free health screenings to all 644,000 attendees.  Health screenings at the stock show have been an ongoing project for Colorado AHEC.  2011 represents the fifth year of providing this valuable service to the public.

On Feb. 4, 2011, dentists across the state volunteered for Give Kids a Smile Day, a national access-to-care day for underserved children.  Thank you to the hundreds of Colorado volunteers who made this year’s program a success!  Your volunteer time and support of this annual program is greatly appreciated.

Red Flags Legislation Signed by President Obama

January 11, 2011

In late December, President Obama signed and passed legislation exempting certain businesses, including dental practices, from the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Red Flags Rule.  In a measure to protect the public, the FTC and federal financial institution regulatory agencies established the "Red Flags Rule," which would require certain businesses to develop and implement a written identity theft prevention program to combat identity theft in new and existing customer/patient accounts.

Slam Dunk for TeamSmile

December 13, 2010

On Dec. 4, as part of the NBA Season of Giving, the Denver Nuggets partnered with TeamSmile to host a free dental care clinic for children in need in the Denver community.  TeamSmile provided free oral health assessments, dental treatment and dental instruction to over 120 low-income children.
