Medicaid Reschedules Orthodontic Rule Hearing

Alert for Dentists who Provide Orthodontic Services Under Medicaid

Medicaid is currently accepting comments on proposed changes to the orthodontic benefit. There has been some recent public concern over the amount of money spent on Medicaid orthodontic codes and some misunderstanding about what is covered. The policy on orthodontic services is likely being revised to help address these concerns.

Medicaid issued a new revision of its policy draft in early September. Comments on the proposed rule changes can be submitted in person or by email, as detailed below. The current markup of Medicaid's orthodontic rule, including the September amendments, can be viewed here. Please note that Medicaid's Medical Services Board hearing on this policy has been rescheduled to Friday, October 14.

Surviving the First Ten Years

CDA Women’s Dentist Group Keeps Everyone in the Loupe

On July 16, the CDA “Ladies in the Loupe” group was officially launched with a brunch at the Denver Botanic Gardens.  Despite the high heat and humidity, over 90 women dentists from across Colorado attended the event.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Kathleen O’Loughlin, the ADA executive director.  Dr. O’Loughlin spoke to the female audience about the fact that women need to embrace leadership in their association to help shape their professional future in Colorado and nationally.

Dentists Respond to Washington Fee Cuts

Dentists in Washington recently experienced a reimbursement rate cut from one of their largest dental insurance carriers.  This situation is a reminder to all dentists of the importance of reading insurance contracts upon initial signing, and actively participating in the governance of insurance companies, whether by attending board meetings, electing board members, voting, etc.

New Prescribing Notification Requirements - Prepare Your Office for Compliance by July 1

Starting July 1, healthcare professionals who prescribe controlled substances must comply with new patient notification requirements. Prescribers, including dentists, must notify any patient who gets a prescription for a controlled substance that the patient's identifying information will be entered into a statewide database of controlled substance prescriptions. The database is called the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program or PDMP. CDA members, click here to download sample forms and labels with notification language available to members only on the CDA Website.

Congratulations 2011 CU Dental Graduates!

On May 27, the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine presented 48 dental graduates with their Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees.  CDA Executive Director Dr. Quinn Dufurrena was the commencement speaker this year, and encouraged the class of 2011 to get involved and be active participants in the dental profession and their communities.

Colorado Dentists Attend Washington Leadership Conference

Each spring, the American Dental Association hosts a legislative and lobbying conference in Washington, D.C.  Dentists from around the U.S. participate in a three-day conference that provides a mix of prominent speakers, issue briefings, grassroots education and political training. This year’s event, held May 9-11, was organized by Colorado’s own Dr. Rhett Murray.  Eight CDA dentists were able to participate in the Washington Leadership Conference, with the CDA sponsoring three members’ participation and five additional Colorado dentists attending as ADA representatives.

Boulder County Dentists Care for Community

For the ninth year, dentists in Boulder County participated in the annual Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) Adopt-a-Smile/Free Dental Care Program.  Teresa Marshall, R.N., M.S.N., and Susan Rowley, R.N., M.S., C.P.N.P., have administered the program for its entirety and contacted the CDA to express their gratitude toward the dental profession.  

“I am so impressed, considering our current economic downturn, that each year our local dentists demonstrate their caring and generosity by becoming volunteer dentists stepping forward to donate their services,” said Marshall.
