Students Explore Careers in Dentistry

The Explorer Post Careers in Dentistry program gives students who are interested in the dental profession hands-on experience and education through monthly programs conducted by volunteer CDA dentists.  This program, sponsored by the CDA and the Metro Denver Dental Foundation, was created to provide a unique experience to high school students, college students and young adults who are considering a future career in dentistry. This program gives students an understanding of dental careers to help them make the right choices now to succeed later.

State Board of Dental Examiners Revises Licensure Rule

The State Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) is revising its regulations on licensure for dentists and dental hygienists. Major changes to the rule include:

  • Clarifying that financial responsibility (liability coverage) requirements apply to dental hygienists (unless they are covered under a dentist’s policy),
  • Consolidating all licensing rules into one section for ease of reference,
  • Adding limited recognition for training received in the military, and
  • Renumbering rules due to consolidation of the licensure provisions.

Revisions to X-Ray Regulations: Use of Radionuclides in the Healing Arts

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has proposed revisions to regulations governing the use of radionuclides by medical professionals (Part 7 of the radiology rules). A copy of the proposed changes can be accessed by clicking here.

The proposed rule changes appear to have minimal impact on the dental profession, as the changes would primarily impact healthcare practitioners who use nuclear pharmaceuticals for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes. These applications are uncommon in dental practice.

Next Tuesday: Don’t Forget to Vote

Mark your calendar! Election day is right around the corner on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The 2011 ballot will ask your input on the election of local officials and several ballot initiatives.

From a dental perspective, the Denver City Paid Sick Leave initiative has implications for small business employers. This measure, Initiative 300, would require that all businesses in Denver offer their employees paid sick leave.

Late on Your Taxes? Take Advantage of Ongoing City, State and Federal Tax Amnesty Programs

Colorado Tax Amnesty Program
The State of Colorado is offering a grace period to pay outstanding individual and business state taxes including:

  • Personal, corporate and partnership income taxes,
  • State sales and use tax, and
  • City/county sales and use tax collected by the Colorado Department of Revenue.

If you failed to file a past state tax return in a timely manner or accidentally underreported taxes on a previous return, this is a great opportunity to fix the oversight and avoid most of the associated tax penalties (both criminal and monetary). The program runs Oct. 1, 2011 through Nov. 15, 2011.

Forum to Help Reduce Prescription Drug Abuse Coming to Colorado Nov. 10

Peer Assistance Services is hosting a Prescription Drug Abuse Forum at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora on Thursday, Nov. 10. Participants will develop a state action plan to reduce prescription drug abuse in Colorado. Dentists, healthcare providers and other interested community leaders are invited to attend. The forum features prominent speakers, including Gov. John Hickenlooper and Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
