CU Receives Innovation Award

The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine received the Outstanding Innovation Award by an Academic Dental Institution as a part of the 2013 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement (Gies Awards).  Only one dental school is selected per year for this honor.  The school was recognized for the development of an innovative interprofessional (IPE) curriculum that prepares graduates for future team-based practice, and provides a model for other dental institutions embracing IPE.

Are you Interested in Serving on the State Board?

The Colorado State Board of Dental Examiners will have four vacant positions available in January 2013. The state will appoint two dentists, one hygienist and one public member to fill these vacant positions on the board.  Each appointment will be for a four year term.  The commitment to serve on the state board includes participation in quarterly full board meetings, monthly panel meetings and additional committee meetings throughout the year.

2.3% Medical Device Tax to Impact Dental Offices in January 2013

Starting Jan. 1, 2013, many medical and dental devices will be subject to a 2.3% excise tax, mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The primary impact to most dental offices is expected to be a correlated price increase on purchases of dental equipment, materials and supplies in 2013.

As a Small Business, You MUST Submit Form 1099-MISC

Your dental practice, like all businesses, is required to file Form 1099-MISC for each independent contractor or vendor that has been paid at least $600 during a calendar year.  It is important to file these forms to avoid costly audits and fines by the government.

Your CODPAC Dollars at Work

During the 2012 election cycle, members of the CODPAC Board of Directors conducted an extensive candidate screening process to identify and support dentistry’s best advocates at the state Capitol. CODPAC interviewed almost 40 candidates for state legislative office, and received written applications from nearly 60 additional candidates. CODPAC ultimately supported 56 candidate campaigns and endorsed 21 of these candidates at the highest level of support. CODPAC’s interview and endorsement process allowed the CDA to foster important relationships for the 2013 legislative session and educate candidates on critical dental issues.

CDA Welcomes Akila Martin

The CDA is happy to welcome and introduce its new office manager, Akila Martin.  Akila joined the CDA in 2012. Prior to the CDA, Akila spent 10 years in the medical support field specializing in customer service, administrative support and operations oversight.  Akila draws on her past experience as the national membership coordinator for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, as well as her vast administrative involvement helping organizations achieve JCAHO accreditation. Her responsibilities at the CDA include Peer Review administration, systems and operations support, and meeting coordination.  She also oversees the x-ray training program. Dr. Ken Versman, ADA 1st Vice President

At the ADA Annual Session in October, Dr. Ken Versman, a CDA past president, became the American Dental Association’s first vice president.  For the past year, Dr. Versman served the ADA as its second vice president. In both roles, his charge is to assist the ADA president as requested, while serving as an ex officio member of the ADA House of Delegates and the ADA Board of Trustees.

This Saturday: Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is this Saturday, Sept. 29. Dentists are encouraged to talk with their patients about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and inform them that they can bring their unwanted or expired medications—including opioid painkillers—to disposal sites across the country. Grant Funding Available for Dental Care Provided to OAP Seniors

The state of Colorado currently has $3M of grant funding available for organizations and providers who provide dental care to seniors eligible for Old Age Pension (OAP) assistance. The deadline to apply for the grant funding is Oct. 15, 2012. The grant funding will be most applicable to clinics, organizations and dental providers that routinely provide charitable or reduced cost care to OAP seniors, as the maximum allowable fees and procedures under the program are currently very limited. Just Weeks to Go! COMOM Gears Up for Pueblo Event
