The Colorado Dental Board Requests Input on Rules and Polices

The Colorado Dental Board is conducting a comprehensive review of its rules and policies. Several Dental Board rules were already reviewed as part of Sunset Review rulemaking conducted in early 2015. Now, the Dental Board is tackling all remaining rules and policies (a full list of rules being reviewed is included at the bottom of this article).

Update: Medicare Opt In and Opt Out Requirements for Dentists

December 17, 2015 (updated March 8, 2016)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has extended the deadline for Medicare Part D ordering/referring providers to opt in or opt out to Feb. 1, 2017. Why is this important? Dentists who treat Medicare patients must either enroll in the Medicare program or opt out to ensure tests, procedures, devices and drugs ordered for Medicare patients will be reimbursed, as well as prevent denial of reimbursement for other providers you refer patients to. Currently, this requirement applies to the federal MediCARE plans (generally senior and disabled patients) as opposed to the state-based MediCAID plans (for low-income patients).

COFluorideFacts.org Goes Live to Help Colorado Communities

The CDA and Oral Health Colorado (OHCO) launched this week, Colorado Fluoride Facts, a website and set of social media tools that communicate about the benefits, safety and support of community water fluoridation in Colorado. Because of the challenges to this proven public health benefit across Colorado—which have stretched from Loveland to Denver and across to Montrose—the CDA and OHCO developed the online tools to better educate elected officials, community members and supporters about fluoridation.

How Did the 2015 Legislative Session Affect You?

Colorado’s 2015 state legislative session ran from Jan. 7 through May 6. As always, the CDA worked hard at the statehouse on your behalf. It was a busy – and productive – session for the dental profession. This year, the CDA was successful in enacting some reforms to insurer rating systems that will help ensure dentists are treated fairly and consumers have access to accurate information. In addition, the CDA monitored nearly 50 bills that had direct and indirect impacts on the dental profession.

Sunset Review: Anesthesia Rule Changes

During fall 2014 and spring 2015, the Colorado Dental Board conducted rulemaking hearings in order to implement the dental sunset review bill. The State Board established four related rulemaking committees: anesthesia; CE and fining; licensure; lasers, dental hygiene prescribing and dental laboratories. Ten committee meetings were held through the fall, as well as five rulemaking sessions. These meetings were open for dentist participation, and the CDA encouraged member dentists to attend and provide input.
